Approach to School Counseling (What to Expect)

At River City Guidance & Resilience, our counseling approach is rooted in the belief that every student can succeed when provided equitable access to academic, career, and personal/social supports. We implement a comprehensive, data-driven, and student-centered framework designed to meet the diverse needs of all learners.

Student-Centered and Data-Informed Practice

RCGR counselors use a student-first philosophy supported by ongoing data collection and analysis. We monitor attendance, academic progress, behavioral trends, and social-emotional indicators to tailor interventions that address the whole child. This ensures that every student receives the right level of support at the right time. All services are aligned with the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Model and the ASCA National Model domains: Academic Development, Career Development, and Social/Emotional Development.

Tiered Support System

Our counseling services operate within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS):

  • Tier 1: Schoolwide Prevention and Education
Universal lessons and programs promote college and career readiness, positive behavior, and mental wellness for all students.

  • Tier 2: Targeted Small Group Interventions
Students demonstrating specific needs—such as attendance issues, peer conflict, or academic challenges—receive focused, small-group support.

  • Tier 3: Individualized Counseling and Referrals
Short-term, solution-focused counseling addresses immediate concerns. When needs extend beyond the school’s scope, counselors connect families with trusted community agencies and mental health partners for continued care.

Collaborative Partnerships

We believe collaboration creates stronger outcomes. RCGR counselors work hand-in-hand with teachers, administrators, families, and community partners to create a unified support network. Through regular consultation, family engagement events, and community resource connections, we ensure that students are supported academically and emotionally both inside and outside the classroom.

What Students and Families Can Expect

  • Compassionate, confidential, and culturally responsive counseling interactions.

  • Opportunities to participate in goal-setting, growth tracking, and solution planning.

  • Clear communication, timely follow-up, and access to ongoing support and referrals.

At RCGR, students can expect a safe space to be heard, families can expect consistent communication and advocacy, and the school community can expect data-informed programming that fosters resilience and readiness for life beyond graduation.
